The student’s hard home hunt in today’s Denmark
The clock strikes 00.01 on July 28 and you, along with 65,165 other young students, have finally received the happy news that you are enrolled in your dream education. Like so many other newly admitted students, the next step in the dream is to find a small cozy apartment close to your respective educational location.
You start researching the market and the first thing that comes up in your quest are articles that tell about the students’ struggle to get a home, especially around the start of their studies. Similarly, you see towering prices for apartments and lack of student housing. You can see the dream crumbling quietly as it quickly dawns on you that you are in fierce competition with many other newly admitted students who have the same dream.
The dream apartment is within easy reach
There are a lot of others in the same situation and although it may seem obvious, there is hope ahead. Among other things, a survey from Nordea shows that, although there are fewer colleges for example in 2017 than there were in 2013, three years ago there were more people living at home aged 18-29. In 2014, 29% of respondents lived at home, whereas in 2017 it is only 18%.
In addition, the average rent in 2016 for the same age group is DKK 3,300 a month. The above illustrates that although there is stiff competition in the housing market, more people are moving away from home today than in 2014. Similarly, they live on average in an SU-friendly apartment. This indicates that there is, after all, the opportunity to find an apartment at the start of the study.
However, it can be difficult to find around the different options you have and just how great the chance is to get hold of the different types of housing.
In addition, we have compiled this infographic based on a student’s thoughts on the tough housing hunt. It gives you a detailed overview of the different housing options you have. You will also get an overview of what you can expect to pay for housing expenses when you move from home, for each type of housing.
Following this infographic, you will have an ever-present understanding of your options in your further home search. You will be ready to choose the type of housing that suits you best and will further be able to afford your dream apartment.
